International Engineering Accreditation

The Washington Accord was signed in 1989. It is an agreement between the bodies responsible for accrediting professional engineering degree programs in each of the signatory countries. It recognizes the substantial equivalency of programs accredited by those bodies, and recommends that graduates of accredited programs in any of the signatory countries be recognized by the other countries as having met the academic requirements for entry to the practice of engineering. The Washington Accord covers professional engineering undergraduate degrees.

The signatory countries of the Washington Accord are Australia, Canada, Ireland, Hong Kong, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, and the United States. The accord continues to grow. Recently Singapore, Malaysia and Germany were granted provisional accreditation with the Washington Accord. Providing these countries meet the specified accreditation requirements, it is anticipated that full accreditation will be finalised within two years; thus enabling engineering graduates from Singapore, Malaysia and Germany to be fully accredited engineers in signatory countries and vice versa.
